All Alone In The Moonlight aka Memories

On a whim, I decided to check out what my friends are up to, so I headed on over to S. Evan Townsend’s blog. I noticed that on April 13th, he’d posted about using writing prompts as blog ideas. This particular one focused on his first memory, so I thought I’d share what I believe to be mine.

I was about three. I know this because I was still living in Pennsylvania at the time. I had been enrolled in a preschool there. I don’t exactly remember much about the school itself, but I recall the swing set that rested beside the building. I had been sitting on one of the swings, swinging, and my best friend at the time was swinging next to me. I told her that we were moving.

I don’t remember her response, but I guess it really doesn’t matter. I don’t recall ever seeing her again. In fact, I don’t even remember her name, so if I wanted to try looking her up, I wouldn’t be able to. Still, this memory had a profound impact on my life.

As much as I want to blame the people who raised me for this being the point where things started going wrong for me, I’m not going to. I can’t say for certain that things would have been completely different if we’d stayed, but I might have belonged better there than I did when we moved to Maryland. Even though I started kindergarten with a bunch of kids who didn’t know each other, I think they picked up on the fact that I had come from a different culture, and that caused them to treat me as an outsider.

So, there you have it. The first thing I can distinctly remember. What’s the first memory you have? And how old do you think you were? Feel free to share in the comments!
